What are Climate Ambassadors?

The Climate Ambassador Programme is funded by the Department of Education and delivered by the Met Office to help schools achieve their sustainability goals, and turn climate ambition into climate action.

Climate Ambassadors are trained volunteers who offer support to education settings to help develop and deliver impactful School Climate Action Plans, as well as motivate young people in climate action. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds including the private, public, charity and education sectors, and form a diverse network across the UK.

The ambassadors support both the development of Climate Action Plans, as well as implementing the plans by working with staff and students on different themes, projects and campaigns.

Why are they needed?

Published by the Government in April 2022, the Department for Education Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy states that all schools should have a Climate Action Plan and a Sustainability Lead in place by December 2025.

Climate Actions Plans must address 4 pillars and Climate Ambassadors can offer support with all of these themes:

Decarbonisation of the school estate and operations

Adaptation and building resilience against climate change risks

Increasing biodiversity on school sites

Climate Education and developing skills for green jobs

Who can be an ambassador?

Anyone with knowledge and skills in any of the four areas above. You must be passionate and motivated to work with education settings and be able to commit a minimum of one day per year, spread over three activities. You should be willing to build a meaningful connection with the community at the education setting/s you’re linked with. There is lots of support available to you through core training, upskilling, resources and CPD opportunities – all organised through the South West Regional Hub.
