Marldon’s community composting group, supported by Sustainable South Hams, offers a great example of the potential for community composting in the South Hams. Read on to find out more, and to hear about how to register for the many opportunities we are opening up for your community’s composting champions.

The first month of the year has seen Marldon’s new Community Composting Site getting off to a flying start with a Christmas tree collection kicking off the first day of work. One of our Composting Mentors, Ben Bryant is part of the effort and discussed the Marldon site and the opportunities for community composting with Toby Buckland on BBC Radio Devon.

Our Composting Pilot Projects are getting underway, and we’re very pleased to invite community composting champions to apply now. Read below for specific details on the opportunities currently available, and then fill in the form here and we’ll be in touch with more details.

Community Composting Fact Sheets

Lessons learned about “barriers to entry” from the establishment of the Marldon Community Composting Facility will be documented in fact sheets by the end of April 2024 and made available for any community wishing to replicate the project

Community Compost Training

Over the weekend of the 27th & 28th April in South Brent, Nicky Scott and Ben Bryant will be leading an in depth course suitable for all communities interested in developing a community composting site.

Repurposing Brown Bins: Train the Trainer course

We will be demonstrating the best methods for repurposing redundant brown bins into wormeries, rainwater butts and compost bins at this course. Attendees will leave the course with the knowledge and equipment necessary to convert brown bins in their own communities. The course will run on the 4th May and / or 6th June.

Home Composting Roadshow

SusSH has developed a roadshow, suitable for pop up events, which engages and informs the public with household composting. Communities and community groups can sign up to express interest in a visit from the Roadshow team.

Home Composting Demo Site

We are working with Sustainable South Brent to create a home composting demo site displaying various composting methods. This will be available for visits from interested groups.

Neighbourhood Food Waste Compost Clubs

SusSH is working with one or two sites to trial food waste Compost Clubs, at either neighbourhood/street level, or looking at small business commercial waste.

If any of these offers are of interest to you or your community group, please fill out the relevant section(s) of this form.
