Sustainable South Hams and South Dartmoor Community Energy are hosting an Energy Assembly on Saturday 18th October 2025 in Kingsbridge, exploring how communities, households and businesses in South Hams can accelerate the transition to become more energy resilient.
The need to reduce energy consumption, generate local energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels has never been greater and yet many solutions are already available and a huge array of opportunities exist for our local communities, which the event will shine a light on.
The Energy Assembly, funded by South Hams District Council, will bring together community groups, councillors, local businesses and housing associations along with energy advice organisations, renewable and retrofit installers and associated businesses.
It will feature an exhibition and networking session, plus talks and workshops on themes including; fuel poverty and affordable warmth, retrofit and renewables, easy to replicate practical community projects and larger-scale renewable energy projects for communities and local businesses.
Many South Hams homes are poorly insulated, draughty and inefficient and around a quarter of households in the district are living in fuel poverty, broadly defined as spending 10% or more of their income on energy costs, often pushing them into poverty.
The event will explore common myths around issues like heat pumps, tips for avoiding cowboy contractors, as well as sources of advice and grants. Plumbers, fitters and installers will be welcome to explore innovations and expand their knowledge base.
South Dartmoor Community Energy will be highlighting the free, independent, impartial support that they provide to all householders across the district, and South Hams Citizens Advice Bureau will promote their services and grants which support people in energy crisis.
Jane Nichols, CEO of Sustainable South Hams said ‘We have run a number of Assemblies in recent years on a range of topics from Rivers to Education with the aim of connecting, supporting and inspiring community action on climate and nature. There is no substitute for bringing people together and exploring how we can collaborate on these critical issues.’
